2016 is the Year of Art. 366 days. 366 pieces of art. Let's do this.

Today’s picture looks pretty uninteresting. And it kinda is, at least until you hear the back story.

Today has been a wet, rainy, stormy grey day in Edmonton. But, with most storms, comes lightning, and this stump is all that now remains of a tree that was stuck by lightning in Old Strathcona. I learned about this tree this afternoon through the Global News story. It was surprising for a couple of reasons, the first being that you rarely see stories of lightning strikes in urban areas. The second, because it happened only 3 blocks from where I live!

After work I walked up in the light rain to get a picture. I knew the cross streets but was unsure I was going the right direction down 85 Ave until I saw bits of bark and tree shred up and scattered across the sidewalk. The city has done a great job of cleaning up any hazards and will soon, I’m sure, put a new tree in to grow tall and majestic like it’s neighbours.

Today’s picture is of what remains of a once great tree and serves as a reminder that, even in the heart of the city, Mother Nature is closer than you think.
